Report on the First Chinese Knowledge Competition in the RTP Area

By the Committee of the first Chinese Knowledge Competition

(CAFA, CCS, CSCH, RACL)

The competition was co-organized by CAFA, and the three local Chinese schools (CCS, CSCH, and RACL), and held on Sunday, May 11, from 2-5 pm at the auditorium of MCNC. The games were designed based on grade level (elementary, middle, and high school). Three students at each level from each school participated in the contest. The CCS team did not have a separated high school team. Their middle school students participated in both middle and high school level competitions.

Two types of games were played. The first one is Sentence Completion or SC for short. It is similar to Wheel of Fortunate. Students are asked to flip an indexed card to display the character and read it loud.

The student is given a chance to guess the character following the one being flipped. Whoever first reads the sentence without flipping all the cards is the winner. If no one can read the sentence, the one has accumulated the highest score is the winner. The second type of game is question and answer or Q & A for short. It is similar to the Jeopardy game. There are four categories of questions, Culture, History, Geography, and Miscellaneous (riddles and sciences, etc). Each question is tagged with a score. At the end of the section, the one who has accumulated the highest score is the winner.

These games were originally designed by Weishi Huang, former principal of Chinese School of Chapel Hill. Since becoming a board member of CAFA, Weishi was asked by the CAFA president Daling Wen to lead the Education Committee in CAFA to enrich educational activities among all CAFA members and the local community.

Approximately, we spent one hour for each level of the competition. The final results show that the students from Chapel Hill grabbed all top winners at all levels. However, this does not mean students from Chapel Hill have more knowledge than other schools because the winner is determined both by fortunate and knowledge. As a matter of fact, all participating students show remarkable performance. They are well prepared and very enthusiastic about the games. When asked if they learned anything today, and want to do it again, the answer was positively yes. Parents also praised the event, and hope we can continue.

Of course, the rules will be improved next time when we play again.

The most impressive winner is the 7 and half year boy. He is the youngest student among the contestants. Yet he was able to grab the gold medal in the elementary group. All the winners are listed below:

Elementary: Vijay Zhong (钟音龙)

Middle: Jessie Feng (冯叶)

High: Kelly Jiang (江开丽)

Lets congratulations to them and thank all leaders and parents, volunteers from CAFA, CCS, CSCH, and RACL for their support, without which this would not have been possible.
